Workplace environment and culture is an important aspect of a job, however, it is difficult to predict what it will be like before you start work. Job descriptions don’t usually give information on a company’s philosophy and culture and when applying for a position we usually focus on presenting ourselves well rather than looking at the potential employer and their work environment. Below are some points to look at in order to find out if the role and company is the right fit for you:
- Diversity: Does the company or organization really believe in diversity? Just a small percentage of creative directors are female, so most companies generally have a long way to go in terms of diversity. Regardless of whether you are a man or a woman, working for a company that promotes equality and diversity should be a priority. To gauge what the real picture is in terms of diversity at the company, look at the company’s board and non-executives, also look at what the company is doing to actively promote diversity in the work place.
- Career Flexibility: Are you just looking for a job or looking to further your career? If you are thinking about your career then you need to make sure the company or organization you hope to work for has room for you to grow. At the interview ask questions on career progression, tell them that you are keen to develop within the role and explore more possibilities at the company. This will not only give you an idea of whether company has a good future for you but will also reveal your drive to succeed to your interviewer.
- Work Culture: Having the right kind of work culture is vital, it can make or break a company due to its influence on everything – from the way people act and how they communicate to the experiences of its customers. Most of your waking hours are spent at work, so a workplace culture that you can contribute to and are proud of, will make those hours more enjoyable. A company that makes use of a culture that prioritizes employee wellbeing is a good choice. Check to see if your potential employer promotes things like leisure activities, employee days out and team building excursions.
- Opportunity: This is another important factor to look at – Your potential work place should provide you with more opportunities to better yourself. The more qualified and experienced you are, the more you can bring to the role. Training and development is an essential part of career progression and growth, so check to see what approach your potential employer takes to this. Are they a global company through which you can gain valuable experiences in overseas markets, and how do they support training and development?
- Leadership: Good companies will promote and advocate honesty and openness from the bottom of the ladder all the way to the top. Although chief executives and senior management are busy people, that doesn’t mean they should be unapproachable. When looking at the right workplace environment for you, ask yourself the question “Do I respect the people in charge and are they the people I should be working for?”
What each person values in a company and workplace environment can be different. The above 5 points are some of the core things for any company that respects and cares for its employees.
