After a job interview, if you think the interview went well and the job is a good role for your skill set and experiences, then you are likely very optimistic to hear about the results. The questions a lot of job seekers ask is if there is anything they could do to increase the chances of a job offer?
There is never a perfect interview and almost all candidates feel that there is something more they could have added. Sometimes job seekers spend more time regretting what was said at the interview than they did planning their answers. People can tend to miss some things under pressure and this is perfectly normal, but should you get back in touch with the employer to provide additional info? we discuss this below
This is a decision you have to judge based on the situation, ask yourself if this is overselling or a useful way of re-establishing contact and making clarifications. Are you going to provide some vital & relevant information you actually missed mentioning, or are simply going to add more material in hope of marketing yourself better? If you really did miss something vital then get in touch with them, as long as it is information that is relevant to the job, your skills and experience.
Sometimes if you are aiming at increasing the chances by swaying someone you’ve already convinced and mention things that are vaguely relevant. Chances are it will sound like you are trying to persuade them to swing the decision in your favour, and may be considered unwelcome.
If you do decide to contact the interviewer or employer after, decide on the key points you are going to make early on and note them down. Think about the quality of your answers and make sure they are to the point and relevant to the role and your skill set. Try not to seem like you are overly exerting pressure as it can sound like you are pushing for a decision or asking for some kind of special consideration, which busy interviewers will consider to be irritating.
If you decide to re-connect with an employer before a job offer, don’t plead or add on lots of new information, instead just add one or two highly relevant points and thank them for an enjoyable discussion or meeting.
