Finding a new candidate for that role can sometimes be a difficult task, you don’t always get the ideal person and in some cases you run ads for several weeks with little to no effect. Discussed below are some useful tips for recruiters on crafting a good job ad that will attract the right candidates and capture their attention:
- Make sure the job title (position) makes sense: When a candidate looks at a job they see the job title to determine whether it is something suited to their specific skillset. If the job title doesn’t make sense then the job seeker would skip past it and move to one that they feel is more suited. Hence its vital that the job title displayed is something that is commonly used for that position and makes sense to the reader. You can use fancy titles that sound cool, but if they have no meaning as to what the role entails then results of that job ad may not be the best.
- It can help to be supportive rather than demand: The way you phrase the job description and skills can also matter when it comes to attracting the right candidate. It can also reflect on what the job seeker would perceive as your work place culture. It’s important not to demand that they have skills but rather describe the skills they require and include information such as what they will need to get into the roll as well as how the company will help them develop further within the role and organisation itself.
- Highlight Important Keywords: Use text styling such as bold to make important keywords stand out more prominently. When candidates read a job description and see these highlighted words they are more likely to understand what is important and better understand their requirements.
- Differentiate between required and extra skills: Some skills for a job are absolutely required and cannot be a compromise, where as other skills make it more advantages for the candidate although not essential. Be sure to clearly differentiate between these so the candidate knows exactly what he or she needs and how they can gain an advantage.
- Include Details of Salary: Including details of the salary offered (especially if it’s a very competitive salary) is a good way to attract candidates. Job seekers are significantly more likely to apply for a job that has salary details advertised rather than one that doesn’t. A good salary is a great motivator for job seekers.
- Make use of images: A visually appealing ad is more attractive, people are more likely to have an impact by what they see, so if the option is available try to include company logos, use nice colours and include another appropriate image where possible.
