Congratulations! - After the exhausting process of job hunting and interviews, you’ve finally secured a new job. This doesn’t mean the hard work is all over - in fact it’s just begun, now it’s time to make a good impression on your first day at the new job
Discussed below are a few of the things you can focus on to have a successful first day:
- Punctuality is Key: Getting to work on time is very important, especially on your first day. Set an early alarm, wake up with plenty of time to have coffee (if you drink it), some breakfast and to shower/change. You must also keep a buffer time in case of traffic or some unexpected delay to public transport. Always plan to arrive 15 minutes early especially on your first day. Your punctuality (on your first day) will be one of the very first impressions you make to both your colleagues and superiors, ensure that it is a good one.
If for some reason or the other you are late, make sure you call ahead and notify your manager so they are aware. - Dress to Impress: Dressing well is not something that applies just for the interview stage, on your first day you will generally be meeting your co-workers and managers amongst other activities. Don’t dress too casual, make sure you look professional and good as this is the first impression they will get when they see you. Wear an outfit that reflects professionalism, is in line with the office culture while also portraying your motivation and seriousness about the job.
- Ask Questions & Take Notes: Asking questions isn’t wrong, especially on your first day or when dealing with something new. If you aren’t clear about how something works or a specific task, be sure to ask the necessary questions and take notes so you don’t make a mistake later. As important as it is to ask questions, it is also vital that you take notes of anything you may need to remember for later.
- Stay focused: Being focused is an important part of any job on a daily basis, but is especially important on the first day. Try to avoid getting distracted by your mobile phone, or spending time on social media. Try not to be disturbed while at work and focus on learning and performing your best on the first day at work.
