For employees with creative talent their expectations from the workplace are not limited to just the salary, position or job security – they usually choose a job or work environment that is interesting, fun and drive their intrigue. So as an employer who is in search of the best talent what can you do to create an environment that retains such employees? Discussed below are some tips:
- Be creative with your job post: No matter what they say first impressions always count. The first impression usually has an impact, so remember your job post is the first impression your business will make on your employees. Creative employees want to work with companies that have a good personality and a ‘cool’ image. Use your job posting as a way of expressing your company’s image and work culture, the opening paragraph is a good place to capture the attention of a protential creative employee.
- Have some flexibility: Having a good process and work system in place is definitely important, but at the same time it’s important not to have too many strict rules that can suppress creativity without providing any real benefit to the business. For instance allow room for remote working, casual dress codes and even smart open office set-up that promote employee engagement and creativity.
- Let them have the freedom to be creative: Allow your employees to provide their creative input and use their creative ideas. This makes them feel more valued rather than just a robot implementing or performing someone else’s visualization/idea.
- Ensure the work environment is fun and inspiring: Creative employees generally look to their surrounding environment for inspiration in order to ignite their ideas and get them to flow. A work space that is fun, interesting, encourages movement and build a community of different skills and talent will be very attractive to potential candidates. In addition to this having perks such as work drinks, team lunches, sport activities and even work outings can help improve the bon between co-workers which than translates through to their ability to work in teams and find solutions. Similarly celebrating an employee’s birthday can make them feel appreciated and feel like they are part of the ‘office family’.
