In today’s global job market it can be very tough for recent university graduates and young professionals to find their first job. It can be even harder for them to impress their senior managers once they are there.
Discussed below are some ways you can impress your employers and set yourselves apart at your new job:
- Constantly learning: Show that you constantly want to learn from your experience and grow your skill base. Having curiosity to learn and improve your knowledge in something is always considered positive.
- Confidence and Being Humble: It can be difficult to strike the right balance between confidence and humility. Various situations can demand a young graduate or professional to show their confidence and stand up to themselves, however there can be some situations which will require them to admit a mistake, that they are learning and ask meaningful questions on how to improve themselves.
- Follow up: Never let a loose end go, always follow up on your promises. Even if it was just a casual remark and you said you would do something, make sure it’s done. If you get distracted by being bombarded with other work or higher priority work then inform your manager and keep them in the loop
- Value others perspective: Try and learn from your advisors or seniors in the team, value their perspectives and take the time to develop your skills accordingly. Take constructive criticism well and make use of it to improve your work.
- Own up to your mistakes: Everyone makes mistakes, make sure to own up to them and admit when something goes wrong. Making mistakes is fine, but it’s how you deal with them that shapes who you are.
