One of the proudest moments in a person’s career or life for that matter is the moment they obtain their first professional qualification. After all the hard work, this is an achievement to be happy about. However as a graduate it brings to mind the next big hurdle – finding a job.
Discussed below are some tips to consider when hunting for a new job after graduating with your newly attained professional degree.
- Choose a career path then focus on achieving it: Employers don’t like to look at ambiguous applications, it is very important to choose a career path that suits your interests, experience and skills. Your application should show your passion and knowledge for the particular career path you have chosen.
- When thinking about your first job don’t always consider it as the defining one: A lot of graduates think that the first job they get often sets their future career path. This is not usually the case, your perception within the work environment will change and even the work environment and its needs would change. It is better to think about what you would like to do in the next 12 months and try to identify how this first job will facilitate your career progression.
- A master’s degree doesn’t necessarily make you more or less attractive as an employee: It really comes down to what your master’s is in and whether or not you have prior experience. The only time a masters will make you more employable is if it enhances your skills more than an equal amount of time spent doing other things would (eg: work experience). So remember, work experience can be just as valuable as a master’s degree.
- Take control of your job search: Look at your graduate job hunt as a continuous process, think about your career development as an ongoing process that never stops. Identify your skills, values, interests and even your weaknesses. Attempt to make improvements and always look for opportunities that develop your career further.
- Make use of social media: There are plenty of professional social media platforms like LinkedIn that can help you network and find more opportunities. Use such platforms to enhance your network of connections which can help you down the line
